Every rotation, flip and angle change shows instantly on the canvas. The current degree label updates in real time so you always know where you are.

Background Fill Color

Custom angles leave empty corners. Fill them with white for documents and forms, black for dark designs, or keep them transparent for PNG design work.

Guide

Rotate Images Online Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about fixing photo orientation, understanding rotation angles and getting the best output quality.

Why Do Photos Come Out Sideways?

When you take a photo holding your phone sideways, the camera saves the image as landscape but adds a hidden note in the file called an EXIF tag. This tag says "rotate this 90° when you display it." Most apps and websites read this tag and show the photo correctly. The problem happens when you upload to a form, send to someone using older software, or convert the image using a tool that ignores EXIF data. The photo appears sideways because the actual pixel data was never rotated, only the display instruction was added.

Our image rotation tool fixes the actual pixels, not just the tag. So once you rotate and download, the orientation is permanently correct everywhere, regardless of the software, browser or platform used to view it.

When to Use 90° vs a Custom Angle

Most orientation problems are exactly 90°, 180° or 270°. These are photos taken sideways or upside down by a phone camera. The quick buttons fix these in one click with zero quality loss when you save as PNG.

Custom angles are for two situations. The first is creative work: tilting images for design layouts, thumbnails or social posts. The second is corrective work: fixing a slightly crooked scan where the paper was placed at a small angle on the scanner.

  • Sideways phone photo — use the 90° button
  • Upside down image — use the 180° button
  • Crooked scan — use the custom angle slider
  • Creative design tilt — use the custom slider at 15° or 45°

Flip vs Rotate What Is the Difference?

Rotating turns the image around its center point. A 90° clockwise rotation puts the top of the image on the right side. Flipping creates a mirror image without changing the angle. A horizontal flip swaps left and right, like looking in a mirror. A vertical flip swaps top and bottom.

You can combine both at the same time. Rotate 90° and flip horizontally to get a specific orientation that neither action alone would produce. The live preview shows the result of every combination instantly so you never have to guess.

Yes. The quick buttons handle 90°, 180° and 270° in one click. For any other angle, drag the custom slider from 180° left to 180° right, or type an exact number in the input box. This is useful for correcting a crooked scan or tilting an image at a specific angle for design work.

You can upload JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP images up to 20MB. You can download the rotated result as JPG, PNG or WebP. This means you can also change the format at the same time as rotating, for example rotating a WebP and downloading it as a JPG.

For 90°, 180° and 270° rotations, save as PNG for zero quality loss since PNG is lossless. JPG at 92% has very minimal compression and looks visually identical. For custom angles like 15° or 45°, the tool uses pixel interpolation which adds a very small amount of softening. PNG is the best choice when quality matters most. After rotating, you can also use our image compressor to reduce the file size without further quality loss.

No. All processing happens entirely inside your browser using HTML5 Canvas. Your image is never sent to any server, never stored anywhere and never seen by anyone. This makes it safe for ID card photos, passport photos, private documents, medical images and any sensitive content.

Open this page in Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android. Tap the upload area and select your sideways photo from your camera roll. Tap the 90° Right or Left button to correct the orientation. When you rotate by a custom angle like 15° or 45°, the corners of the original image no longer fill the canvas and empty space appears in those corners. Background fill lets you choose white for documents and forms, black for dark designs, or transparent which is only available in PNG output and is perfect for design work where the corners need to be clear.

Yes. You can combine any rotation with any flip. For example rotate 90° and also flip horizontally, or use a custom angle with a vertical flip. The live preview updates instantly so you see exactly how the image looks before downloading. Use the Undo button to go back one step at any point.

JPG produces smaller files and is best for photos and portraits where a tiny amount of compression is acceptable. PNG is lossless, supports transparent backgrounds and is best for logos, graphics and when exact pixel quality matters. WebP gives you a smaller file size than JPG with better quality, making it the best choice for web images and social media uploads. For government forms and portals, use JPG then compress with our image size compressor to meet exact KB requirements.
